Private Music Instruction Options Open at SIC

January 19, 2016

Southeastern Illinois College is presently offering private music instruction to those 16 years of age and older.

Currently, SIC has instruction available in voice, piano, brass and woodwinds. SIC not only wants to increase the number of students in these disciplines, but would like to expand private music instruction to a variety of instruments.

“I would love to see the list grow to include strings, percussion, and organ so that we can begin to build a school orchestra, which I hope to add to our list of available ensembles in the future,” said SIC Music Instructor, Cory Garmane.

Garmane added, “Private lessons are a great place for individuals to gain confidence in their abilities.  The one-on-one instructor creates a pleasant environment for students to receive focused and personalized instruction that they won't get in any other class.  Performing music is a physical, technical, cognitive and creative act.  Research continues to show that music improves mental function, decision-making skills and comprehension along with several other benefits.”

Private music instruction is not the only option for getting involved musically at Southeastern. The Concert Choir is comprised of SIC students and is seeking more members. This choir rehearses on Thursdays from 3-4:50 p.m. The community can also get involved by joining the SIC Community Choir, which rehearses on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m.

SIC asks that those interested speak with Garmane about their instrument of choice and preferred time of lessons. For this and other information on private music instruction, Concert Choir, or Community Choir contact Cory Garmane at cory.garmane@sic.edu or 252-5400 ext. 2235.
