With cool weather quickly approaching, outdoors enthusiasts in southern Illinois will begin dusting off their compound and recurve bows and start preparing for the state’s fall bow hunting season and popular 3D shooting events.
This year, Southeastern Illinois College is offering three courses that will be of interest to bow hunters and 3D shooters alike. OUTR 211 The Mental and Physical Sides of Archery, OUTR 212 Basic Bow Mechanics, and PE 168 Basic Archery are all designed to help archers become more successful in the field and on the practice range. Tuition and fees for each course are $92 for in-district students (Gallatin, Hardin, Pope, Saline, and part of White counties.)
Bow hunter and competitive archer Darin DeNeal will teach The Mental and Physical Sides of Archery on Thursdays 6 – 6:55 p.m. in Room B-204 on the SIC campus. The course explores and examines the various techniques of preparing oneself mentally for hunting and target shooting. In addition, DeNeal will introduce the various muscles used in shooting a bow and explain their functions and purposes.
Basic Bow Mechanics, taught by bow technician Roger Snodgrass of M&R Bowstrings, will meet on Tuesday evenings 6 – 6:55 at M&R, which is located five miles south of Harrisburg on Illinois Route 45. Simple bow construction, tuning, repair, and maintenance will be covered. Students also will have an opportunity to use basic tools and practice fundamental techniques unique to a bow technician’s shop.
Basic Archery is a class that allows students to practice their shooting skills on an outdoor 3D target range located on the college campus. The class will meet Monday – Thursday, 3 – 4:55 p.m. Archie Blair, head archery coach at SIC, will conduct the class.
Individuals interested in enrolling in one or more of SIC’s archery classes are encouraged to contact Blair as soon as possible at 618-252-5400 ext. 3251 or archie.blair@sic.edu.
