American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter


This position is responsible for providing communication access for spoken English through ASL interpretation; interpret spoken English language into ASL (or other manual sign system, if requested) and likewise interpret ASL (or other manual sign system) into spoken English to facilitate communication among deaf and/or hard of hearing students, hearing faculty/staff/students, and other members of the college community.


  1. Interpret deaf and/or hard of hearing students’ classes, events, lectures, student organization sessions, college productions, field visits, tests, tutoring sessions, and related appointments.
  2. Provide information to deaf in emergency situations.
  3. Work closely with the Disability Services Coordinator to provide appropriate accommodations and resources for deaf and/or hard of hearing students.
  4. Maintain ASL Illinois master or advanced licensure.
  5. Translate videos and/or documents into ASL and/or caption videos.
  6. Perform other related duties as assigned.


ASL Illinois master or advanced licensure; substantial experience working in a college or university setting, or ability to demonstrate the necessary skills to interpret; awareness of disability law, accessibility mandates, and accommodations in higher education; working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn online class technology systems in order to help deaf and/or hard of hearing students; understanding of the mission of the community college.
