Large CNC Machinist

Due to significant growth, BWXT has multiple openings for Large CNC Machinists at its Mount Vernon, IN facility!  Primary duties and responsibilities for these roles will include the following routine tasks:

  • Sets up and operates tools and equipment to perform all types of machining operations such as contouring, trepanning, milling, drilling, tapping, boring, turning and any other operations the machine is capable of performing.
  • Cleans and deburrs job as necessary.
  • Performs final inspection of features using both the inspection probe and/or precision measuring equipment.
  • Attaches seals and protective covers as required.
  • Obtains drawings and tools from the crib and verifies the tools are correct for the application and match the tools called for on the program(s).
  • Works with Programmer as necessary to develop and/or test run programs.
  • Proofread programs and notifies Programmer of potential problems.
  • Must be able to edit or modify programs as necessary.
  • Must be able to write minor programs.
  • Must have a working knowledge of proper speeds and feeds for all types of material.
  • Operates crane or assists with the rigging and moving of parts as required.
  • Cleans and lubricates machine.
  • Notifies supervisor of needed machine maintenance.
  • Cleans own work area.
  • Verifies identity of material/jobs.
  • Maintains necessary records and completes process documentation and any other production and inspection records as required.
  • Works from drawings, sketches, process sheets and other forms of verbal and written communication.
  • Work performed must conform to all customer, code and quality control requirements.
  • Works in accordance with all applicable company procedures, policies, and rules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


The successful candidate must have a high school diploma or GED along with a minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience and must pass all required proficiency tests for the position.  Preference will be given to candidates with a two-year technical school certification or equivalent training plus relevant on-the-job experience.

Due to our work with the federal government, U.S. citizenship with no dual citizenship is required for this position.
