News Director


The News Director leads and manages the planning, production, and presentation of news. The News Director reports to the station manager and works in cooperation with station leadership and other staff to support the station mission and efforts.

The News Director has the responsibility to understand and develop news planning, reporting, editing and production. The News Director helps maintain ethical, editorial, artistic and technical standards for broadcast news programs. In addition, the News Director, as the station’s top news authority, is responsible for the journalistic integrity of all station platforms.


Editorial Planning, Scheduling, Editing

The News Director directs and develops story ideas, tracks issues and events, schedules stories for air, and schedules time for interviewing, writing and editing. The News Director acts as a primary editor to ensure news reports and are produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner.

Reporting, Anchoring

The News Director contributes the majority of content, anchors newscasts, hosts talk programs, may appear as program guest, and will produce various spots, features and/or special programs.


The News Director helps maintain equipment and information systems vital to news planning, newsgathering, news production, and news presentation. Furthermore, the News Director oversees the stations’ News social media outlets.

Community Relations and Support

The News Director seeks opportunities to promote public contact and to help ascertain public needs and bolster station success. The News Director will also participate in station events and fundraising activities as appropriate.


The News Director adheres to deadlines and makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention. Furthermore, the News Director is the primary content manager during times of local crisis.


A four-year degree in journalism – or equivalent – preferred. Experience in journalism – preferably in a multi-platform (radio + web) news environment is a plus as is familiarity with radio news common standards and values. Successful candidate will possess broad knowledge of local and regional issues. Must have ability to work within a live program environment. Experience in broadcast production, news writing and editing is necessary and successful candidate must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred skillsets include on-line research, multimedia production, word processing and operation of light office equipment. Must have excellent memory for details, be able to meet daily deadlines under stressful conditions and deal effectively multiple tasks simultaneously.
