SIC Commemorates 50th Anniversary of Vietnam at Veterans Recognition Ceremony

As America recognizes the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, Southeastern Illinois College will welcome and honor our local Vietnam veterans at the annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 6. The ceremony will take place at 12:30 pm in the George T. Dennis Visual and Performance Arts Center lobby. All veterans and members of the community are invited to attend the ceremony.
Presentation of colors, a wreath laying by the Michael Hillegas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and musical performances by the Pre-K class of the Mary Jo Oldham Center for Child Study will again be a part of the festivities. A local Vietnam veteran will be the guest speaker. Light refreshments will also be served.
“Our Vietnam veterans served when their peers protested their efforts. Now these veterans serve our community just as selflessly,” said Emily Henson, Director of Financial Aid and Coordinator of Veterans Services. “I am happy we can honor them as they should have been years ago.”
SIC’s Veterans Services Office is also participating in the VA Homeless Stand Down at Black Diamond Harley Davidson in Marion on October 20. Students, faculty, and staff have donated hundreds of household items, clothing and food to help support local veteran homeless shelters.
Southeastern continues to see a steady student veteran enrollment. Victory Media has recognized SIC in the top 20% of Military Friendly Schools for six years running.
“Southeastern Illinois College is proud to support our fine service men and women,” said Dr. Jonah Rice, SIC President. “Their dedication to our country is most appreciated and we are pleased to serve them in return with important educational opportunities.”
