Shirley Oshel’s legacy of nursing education continues at Southeastern Illinois College, where community gifts and pledges totaling $14,005 are supporting the scholarship established in her name.
Hallie-Kate Oldham of Eldorado, an SIC associate degree nursing student, is the Shirley Oshel Nursing Scholarship recipient for the 2026-27 academic year. She plans to become a registered nurse and hopes to return to SIC one day as a nursing instructor.
Established during Oshel’s lifetime, the scholarship received renewed community support through memorial gifts following her death in June 2026.
Oshel helped establish the Harrisburg School of Practical Nursing in 1956 and later helped develop its associate degree nursing program. The scholarship honors her lasting commitment to nursing education and patient care.
“Shirley devoted her career to helping prepare future nurses, and this scholarship carries that commitment forward,” said Dr. Karen Weiss, SIC President. “We are grateful for the generosity that supports students like Hallie-Kate and helps them work toward their goals.”
In her scholarship essay, Oldham described how her nursing instructor’s compassion, clear guidance and high expectations inspired her to recognize her own potential and pursue a future in teaching.
The scholarship supports nursing students who demonstrate strong academic performance and exemplify the compassion, high ideals and professional standards of the nursing profession. Preference is given to students entering the associate degree nursing program.
Community gifts to SIC scholarship funds help students pursue their education and career goals while honoring people whose lives have made a difference.
