SIC Holds Contest for First Ever School Song
History is being made at Southeastern Illinois College. Currently, SIC is holding a contest for students and the community to write a short poem that will be used as lyrics for the school song, the Alma Mater. This will be the first ever school song for SIC.
“Every school should have an Alma Mater, a song honoring that institution as a place of higher learning,” said Kesler. “I wanted the creation of the school song to be a contest so that everyone associated with SIC—students, faculty and staff, and the community could participate in making history.”
The Alma Mater will serve as SIC’s anthem and will be used during important ceremonies, such as graduation.
Those entering the contest are to write a short poem honoring SIC. The poem should be eight short lines, or four longer lines. The submission deadline is Jan. 16 by 5 p.m. The winner will be announced in Feb. and will receive a Kindle Fire HD and bragging rights. Contestants can email or mail in their submissions.
“This contest is a fun way for the community to get involved and show off their creativity while still paying homage to SIC,” said Kesler.
Creation of the Alma Mater also coincides with the reinstatement of the SIC Concert Band. Currently, SIC is looking for musicians to help reconstruct the band after a 20 year hiatus.
