SIC Offers Performing Arts Opportunities for All Ages this Fall

Visual & Performing Arts

Studio 618 Dancers 2024
Young dancers lit up the stage during last winter’s Studio 618 holiday recital at SIC. Dance classes for K–12 students resume this fall.
Saxophonist
A soulful saxophone solo by Ryan Beck of Carrier Mills rang out during the SIC Band’s winter performance. The ensemble is open to community members age 16 and older.
Something Rotten The Musical
Something Rotten delivered big laughs, bold characters and over-the-top performances at SIC this spring. Fall auditions for Pinocchio and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! will be scheduled for late August.
SIC Concert Choir
SIC Concert Choir students from across the region perform during a recent choral showcase. The ensemble, led by Cory Garmane, collaborates with other colleges—including Rend Lake College—for joint concerts at both campuses near the end of each semester.

As summer wanes, Southeastern Illinois College is ramping up for a dynamic fall semester of music, theatre, and dance opportunities for all ages.

From jazz to tap, and Pinocchio to Christmas classics, SIC offers a full slate of performances and participation options this fall for students and community members alike.

Whether on stage or behind the scenes, those looking to get involved in music, theatre or dance can find their place at SIC this semester.

“Southeastern continues to serve as a hub for performing arts in the region,” said Dr. Kyla Burford, Executive Dean of Student Services. “We’re proud to offer inclusive and affordable opportunities for self-expression through music, theatre, and dance—whether you’re a seasoned performer or just starting out. Whether you have a kindergartener ready to leap into dance class or you’re a retiree looking to reconnect with your musical roots, SIC has a place for you.”

The SIC Community Jazz Band, directed by Brandon Bryant, is open to ages 16 and up and begins rehearsals Monday, Aug. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. Participation is free, and no audition is required. The SIC Community Chorus, directed by longtime choral leader Tim Green, is also free and welcomes members of the public age 16 and older and rehearses Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., beginning Aug. 19. The SIC Concert Choir, under the direction of Cory Garmane, is open to all SIC students regardless of major, begins Aug. 21, and meets every Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. Both the chorus and the concert choir will present end-of-semester performances.

SIC’s Children’s Choir for students in grades 3 through 8 will also begin Aug. 21. Directed by Hannah Nance—Harrisburg High School teacher, award-winning speech coach, and music director for SIC’s summer children’s shows known as Jr. Falcon Productions—this ensemble provides a fun and welcoming environment focused on learning music fundamentals. A holiday concert will be held at the end of the semester on the Allan G. Kimball Stage at SIC.

Dance classes through SIC’s Studio 618 begin Aug. 18 for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Classes include beginning ballet, beginning jazz, intermediate jazz and tap dance. Directed by Joshua Kimball—a professional performer and choreographer with more than a decade of teaching experience—Studio 618 offers a warm, supportive space for children to grow, make friends and work toward a holiday-themed showcase in early December. Kimball also teaches college dance classes as part of the Associate in Fine Arts in Musical Theatre.

SIC Theatre, under the direction of Gareth York, has announced its 2025-26 season, which includes the children’s theatre production of Pinocchio on Sept. 26, with additional daytime performances for local elementary schools. The season continues with How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical Nov. 21–23, Blithe Spirit on Feb. 20, and Godspell April 24–26. Auditions for Pinocchio will be held Aug. 20 and 21, 4-6 p.m. for SIC students only.

For more information about these and other performing arts opportunities, contact info@sic.edu or visit sic.edu/vpac. To register for classes, call 618-252-5400, ext. 4130, or email advising@sic.edu.
