SIC Veterans Day Ceremony Honors Service and Sacrifice
Southeastern Illinois College held its annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony on Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. in the George T. Dennis Visual & Performing Arts Center Lobby, where students, faculty, and community members gathered to honor the courage and sacrifice of America’s veterans.
The ceremony began with the Presentation of Colors by the Color Guard from Eldorado VFW Post 3479, followed by a welcome from SIC President Dr. Karen Weiss. Dr. Tyler Billman led the audience in the National Anthem.
In a solemn tribute, members of the Michael Hillegas Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Cheri McClusky and Rhonda Oglesby, laid a wreath in remembrance of fallen heroes. The congregation then joined together in the Pledge of Allegiance before Jenny Billman delivered a moving rendition of America the Beautiful.
The keynote address was given by Sergeant Tyler Morgan, who shared reflections on his service and the values learned through military experience — including leadership, sacrifice, and perseverance.
“Serving in the Army changed my life in ways I never expected,” reflected Sergeant Morgan. “There were sacrifices, being away from home and missing major life moments, but what I gained was so much greater. The people I served with, the leaders who guided me, and the lessons I learned about strength and perseverance shaped who I am today. Even with everything I gave up, I’d do it all again.”
The SIC Concert Choir performed God Bless America, filling the lobby with patriotic harmony before Dr. Weiss offered closing remarks recognizing local veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.
“At Southeastern, we’re proud to serve many veterans and active-duty students, as well as their family members,” said Dr. Weiss. “They enrich our classrooms and campus life with their experiences, perspectives, and sense of duty, reminding us that education and service share a common goal — building a better future.”
The ceremony concluded with the Retiring of the Colors by the Eldorado VFW Post 3479 Color Guard. The event was coordinated by Michelle Stanley, SIC Senior Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Coordinator.
