Bowling Tournament Raises Nearly $1,800 for Jaylynn Ferrell Scholarship
Ross Cottom Lanes played host to the inaugural Jaylynn Ferrell Bowling Tournament on Sunday, April 7, bringing in $1,765 to the scholarship fund established in honor of the SIC nursing program alum who perished in the 2012 Leap Day Tornado.
Sixteen teams totaling 64 bowlers participated in the event, which was a 9-pin no tap for the men and an 8-pin no tap for the women.
Patty Ferrell said that she happened to drop by the home of Doug and Stacy Cottom, who are proprietors of Ross Cottom Lanes and were neighbors of Jaylynn. When Patty mentioned the golf fundraiser that had been held last September, Doug Cottom mentioned that the bowling alley had a history of doing fundraisers as well. With that, plans were made to add the bowling tournament as a spring complement to the fall golf tournament.
The winning team at the bowling tournament consisted of Scott Britt, Barb Allen, Pam Whiting, and Nancy Cottom. The team generously donated its winnings back to the scholarship fund. The second place team was the “Tuesday Ladies” group, consisting of Paula Switzer, Kathy Fulkerson, Donna Wise, and Martha Hall.
Patty and DJ Ferrell established the scholarship in memory of their daughter to honor her dedication and passion for the nursing field and the program at Southeastern Illinois College – from which Jaylynn was a 2011 graduate. The Ferrells plan to award a $2500 scholarship every year to an ADN (Associate Degree Nursing) student attending SIC.
