Spirituals Concert Planned for May 5 at Southeastern Illinois College
The uplifting power and promise of music will be on display as Southeastern Illinois College’s Community Choir and student Jazz Choir combine to present “Spirituals: Cries of Faith, Hope and Freedom” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 at the college’s George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center.
“This will be a very good concert of spirited, traditional American music,” said Tim Green, who will is serving as director for the performance. Madeline Rogers, SIC alumnus, will provide piano accompaniment.
Classic spirituals slated to be performed will include “Every Time I Feel the Spirit,” “Ride the Chariot,” and “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel,” as well as “O Sifuni Mungu,” which will be performed in Swahili.
“Throughout history music has encouraged and provided hope, and it was no different during the time of slavery,” Green said. “These songs became what we now refer to as Spirituals. The choir has worked hard and we are looking forward to a great concert.”
Tickets for the performance are $5. For tickets, or more information, call 618-252-5400, ext. 2486.
