Gene Humphrey Scholarship Honors Memory of Father and Son

Rolene Humphrey of Harrisburg has established a new scholarship with the Southeastern Illinois College Foundation. This is a permanent endowment with an initial donation of $10,000.
The Gene Humphrey Scholarship Fund in memory of Hughie E. Humphrey, honors the memory of both Rolene Humphrey’s husband and his son. This scholarship will be available to full-time students at SIC with high academic performance who are majoring in a science, technology, engineering or math discipline.
“I am so proud that my husband’s name will live on for years to come through this endowment with the college,” said Rolene Humphrey. “Gene thought education was so important. He always said that if you could read, you could do anything”
Paul Eugene “Gene” Humphrey was a part owner of Walker’s Cleaners in Harrisburg for 42 years. It was Gene’s wish to honor his son Hughie, an SIC alumnus, for his love of math and science.
“We are very grateful to have such a generous family who believes in the power of education,” said SIC President, Dr. Jonah Rice. “Thanks to the Humphrey family, the establishment of the Gene Humphrey Scholarship Fund will provide opportunities for students at Southeastern Illinois College to pursue their higher education for years to come.”
