SIC Board Discusses Lobby Day and Campus Construction at May Meeting
The Southeastern Illinois College Board of Trustees met May 21 to discuss a successful Lobby Day, construction on campus as well as student happenings.
The board learned of good visits with four of our state representatives during Illinois Community College Trustees Association Lobby Day. SIC emphasized to them that support is needed for the governor’s budget and for them to also support the capital bill for community colleges.
“SIC is hopeful that much needed capital funds will be flowing soon,” said SIC President, Dr. Jonah Rice. “The Stanley Center in Carmi and additional work at the main campus are on slate for funding, so we are very hopeful.”
Construction efforts on campus were also discussed. The Learning Commons is currently under renovation to become a better suited learning environment for students. Also, abatement work is being done in A, B and C buildings over the summer. The SIC cafeteria will be closed this summer due to the abatement work. SIC will be evaluating fiscal planning and exploring options for food services during this time.
A bid was awarded to Fager-McGee Commercial Construction Inc. for flooring replacement in buildings A, B and C, while a project concerning energy conservation lighting has been tabled for now.
The board learned that the core values of the college were last updated in the 1990s. Chris Barr, Executive Director for Institutional Effectiveness, will begin reexamining the core values of the institution.
“As the second wave of retirement comes through SIC, this project is needed to ensure our core values are transferred and remain intact,” said Rice.
SIC student trustee, Alex McRoy, reported about student activities. Recently, student government took an end of the year trip to Holiday World and Math and Science club took a trip to the aquarium in Nashville. Theta Sigma Phi members helped with Eldorado High School’s production of Cinderella.
In personnel, the board approved job description and compensation for the Executive Director for Institutional Effectiveness, Chris Barr. The board approved the hiring of full-time Nursing Secretary, Kathy Volkening and David L. Stanley Carmi-White County Center Director, Terri Absher. The board also accepted the resignation of the Food Service Manager, Shirley Malone and Child Study Center Clerk Shirley Johnson and approved the employment of a number of adjunct faculty.
The next meeting of the board will be Tuesday, July 16, at 6 p.m. in the Rodney J. Brenner Board Room at SIC. More information about SIC can be found at www.sic.edu.
