SIC Announces Student Government Members for 2023-24

The Southeastern Illinois College Student Government held its inauguration ceremony Thursday, Oct. 5, to induct new members and swear in officers. There are 20 seats on the student government held by students from all over Southern Illinois. A member of each campus club has the opportunity to serve on the board to ensure a diverse campus representation along with eight senators elected by the student body.

The group, which meets bi-monthly, is the representative body for the students, hosts activities, and works with SIC administrators to improve student life on campus. Last year, SIC Student Government conducted a food drive which raised over 1,000 items for Freddie’s Pantry, the student food pantry on campus. The organization operates the pantry which reopens for fall semester Oct. 23.

In previous years, they partnered with college administrators on projects including the complete renovation of the fitness center, construction of the tornado memorial, and the Student Center patio/fountain project.

Student government also hosts an American Red Cross Blood Drive in the spring, co-hosts video game tournaments in November and March with Math and Science Club, and brings speakers to campus to discuss current events.

“Student Government acts as the voice of the student,” said Student Body President Brylee Bayer during her inaugural address. “Student Government has a history of making a major impact on student life around campus and in the community.”

Bayer said the students plan on building on that tradition which dates back to the organization’s establishment in 1962.

The club also hosts social activities including the fall cookout and scavenger hunt, which helps members build camaraderie. Sponsors for SIC Student Government are Matt Lees, political science instructor, and senior director of campus events, Kellye Whitler.
