The Flower Basket: A Blooming Success in Rosiclare

When Alexandra Austin purchased The Flower Basket in Rosiclare she wasn’t just buying a business — she was preserving a beloved hometown legacy while fulfilling her own entrepreneurial dream. Her journey from a long daily commute to business ownership is a testament to her passion, determination and commitment to her community.
For Alex, The Flower Basket has always been more than just a flower shop — it’s a cherished part of her life. Having visited weekly as a child and even relying on its services for her wedding, Alex developed a deep appreciation for the business and its importance to the Rosiclare community. When the opportunity arose to take over, she saw it as the perfect chance to invest in a career closer to home while making a lasting impact.
Transitioning into the floral industry required Alex to take on new challenges, but she embraced them wholeheartedly. Determined to provide top-quality products and service, she immersed herself in studying floral arrangements, learning from books, online courses and hands-on training. Additionally, her background in healthcare administration equipped her with essential time management and organizational skills, ensuring a smooth business transition.
With the support of the Workforce and Illinois Small Business Development Center (WISBDC), Alex created a strong business plan and financial projections, setting The Flower Basket up for long-term success.
“I recommend the SBDC to individuals looking to buy or start a business,” Austin said. “The SBDC helped map out a business plan, and they helped me feel better about my business purchase by looking at it on paper and with an SBDC consultant.”
Alex’s favorite part of owning The Flower Basket is interacting with her customers. She takes pride in helping people celebrate life’s most special moments through custom floral arrangements and thoughtful gifts.
As she looks to the future, her goals include expanding the shop’s inventory to include unique seasonal offerings, such as Easter baskets — an exciting first in The Flower Basket’s more than 50-year history.
Despite the challenges of keeping up with ever-changing floral trends, Alex embraces the learning process.
“I learn something new every day — even when I think there’s nothing left to learn,” she said.
Her dedication to growth and innovation is what will keep The Flower Basket thriving for years to come.
