Tison Scholarship Promotes Excellence in Engineering

Through the generosity of Michael and Gloria Tison of Harrisburg, the scholarship fund they established last year continues to help pre-engineering majors at Southeastern Illinois College pay for the cost of their education. 

For the second year in a row, an award of $500 will be given to a deserving student who is enrolled as an incoming freshman for the 2013 fall semester, is registered full-time in the fall, has achieved an overall grade point average of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale in high school, is a United States citizen, has attended high school or equivalent in Southeastern Illinois College’s district, and is a resident of Saline County.

Students with a desire to pursue an engineering degree shall receive priority, and a student’s financial need, based upon the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), shall be considered but is not required in awarding the scholarship.

“Gloria and I and my firm, Raymond James Financial Services, started the scholarship in honor of my father, James R. Tison, who graduated with a civil engineering degree from University of Illinois. He went to school through the Air Force ROTC program, which provided him the ability to get his education,” said Tison. 

Tison was sure his father would have taken advantage of the pre-engineering education SIC offers had it been around then.  “It takes a great commitment to earn such a degree, and we are awarding our scholarship each year to a young man or woman from Saline County working towards this goal,” added Tison.

The application deadline for the scholarship is Feb. 28.  Students are encouraged to go to www.sic.edu/scholarships to download the application.  Applications should be submitted by the deadline to the Financial Aid Office, Southeastern Illinois College, 3575 College Road, Harrisburg, IL 62946.
