SIC Student Art Exhibition Open Through August

The final art show in the Southeastern Illinois College Art Gallery for the spring semester is the Student Art Exhibition.  The show opened with a reception on April 26 and will remain open for viewing Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. through August.

The annual show includes paintings, drawings, graphic design and 3D/mixed media images by students enrolled in the art program at SIC. All work was completed during the 2012-13 academic year. 

“Seeing the pieces together in the gallery is a great pleasure – it’s the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work,” said Brent Webb, art instructor.  “We are pleased to have this work displayed for the community, showing the individual creative abilities of each of our art students.”

The art program at SIC prepares students for transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree.  Some of the many careers a degree in art will prepare students for include commercial artist, graphic artist, graphic designer, art teacher, curator, cartoonist, merchandise displayer, jewelry designer, interior designer, floral designer, art historian, set designer, animator, illustrator, and many more.  Positions for these types of careers can be found in museums, advertising agencies, schools, newspapers, publishing firms, manufacturing companies, video production companies, retail firms, etc.

“Art is not just painting or drawing – there are so many opportunities for creativity in a number of careers pertaining to art.  And all of those opportunities can get their start with training for an associate degree in art,” said Webb. 

Recent former students of the SIC art program have gone on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Art from schools like Columbus College of Art and Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Southern Illinois University, as well as continuing their studies in the arts by pursuing their Master of Fine Arts. Students have become art instructors at local high schools, have active showing records (meaning their work has been on display in numerous art exhibitions), and have taken part in artist residencies for teaching purposes or for concentrated artistic growth.
