Nurses Are Superheroes
Vacation Bible School (VBS) children at Dorrisville Baptist Church visited Southeastern Illinois College last month to learn about how nurses are real live superheroes in our communities as part of their theme this year, Super Heroes in the Bible.
SIC Nursing Instructor Susie Lampley led a group of more than 30 fifth graders one morning as she told them about how nurses help people. She also shared some sun safety tips with props, let the kids listen to a computerized child mannequin’s heart, lungs and stomach, and taught the children the Heimlich maneuver.
The children enjoyed taking turns using real stethoscopes on the “patient,” Pediatric Patrick, and performing the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge a marshmallow in their partners’ mouths. A different group of Dorrisville’s VBS children visited SIC’s Shirley Oshel Nursing Complex each day during VBS week.
