SIC Holds New Student Orientations Aug. 2 and 4
Two New Student Orientation sessions for the fall semester have been scheduled at Southeastern Illinois College. First-time degree and certificate students are strongly encouraged to attend one of the orientation sessions and will be awarded free credit for EDUC 122 for attending.
The orientations will cover information on enrollment, financial aid, TRiO student support, txtSIC, student email and online classes. Students attending will also receive a tour of campus and have a chance to get an SIC ID card. Students who have not already done so can also register for classes during orientation. The sessions are additionally a chance to meet other new students, faculty and staff.
Orientation sessions are Aug. 2, 1-3:30 p.m. and Aug. 4, 6-8:30 p.m. on the Harrisburg campus in the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center lobby.
“The New Student Orientation sessions provide students a great opportunity to learn important information about SIC” said Ashley Schultz, high school recruiter/dual credit coordinator. “Students who attend orientation are better prepared to make the transition to higher education.”
SIC offers a variety of scheduling options to fit student needs. Students can save gas and choose their times with online classes, which can be taken from anywhere at any time. SIC offers some degree programs completely online or in a hybrid format with some classes online and others on-campus. Evening classes may be a better fit for students with day-time commitments that prefer a classroom setting.
For students who choose to take online classes, there are several orientation times available. Online class orientations are Monday, Aug. 15 from 6-7 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 10:30-11:30 a.m., 2-3 p.m. and 5-6 p.m.; and Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 9-10 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. All sessions will take place in room B224 at the Harrisburg Campus.
“We show students how to navigate their online or hybrid courses with focus on posting to discussion boards, taking quizzes, uploading assignments to drop boxes, messaging their instructors and checking their grades,” said Karla Lewis, Coordinator of Media Services and Distance Learning. “We make sure students get logged into their courses and encourage them to download and read through their syllabus to know what instructors expect from them. Attending orientation gives students confidence that they will be prepared to be successful in their online courses.”
Registration for the fall semester is going on now and classes begin Aug. 15. Summer office hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Aug. 4. Regular office hours resume the following week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. On Aug. 15-16, the Financial Aid office and the Bookstore will be open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. to better assist students.
