SIC Announces Shain Miller as Men’s Golf Coach for the Falcons

April 19, 2021

Shain Miller, a lifelong resident of Carrier Mills, is the head coach of the new Falcon Men’s Golf Team at Southeastern Illinois College.

Miller is looking forward to encouraging more young people to get involved in the game through coaching the Falcons.

“I really began playing more golf after retirement, and came to the realization that golf was my passion,” said Miller. “Golf is a game that can be played for a lifetime.”

Miller began his career as a Youth Supervisor at the Illinois Youth Center in Harrisburg and worked his way up the ranks, retiring as a Youth Supervisor IV after 30 years of service.

This is not the first time SIC has had a golf team. Veteran English Instructor Dr. Joan Ferrell coached a men’s team about two decades ago, and it was dropped due to budget cuts.

“We are excited to bring golf back and offer more options for students in and around our region,” said SIC President Dr. Jonah Rice. “Community colleges around the nation are trying new ideas and solutions to serve new populations and improve enrollment.”

Rice said the college was excited about Coach Miller. “Shain comes highly recommended and has a strong history of athletics in his background. He will be a great addition to our coaching staff and athletics program.”

Southeastern has reinvented and expanded its athletics offerings not just for cost savings and enrollment increases, but to focus more on local players to provide opportunities for them to continue the games they love, and that includes the new men’s golf team. The men’s golf team will compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association level.

“I am very excited that we are adding Men’s Golf to the Athletic teams at SIC,” said Athletic Director Jeremy Irlbeck. “The interest level of golf in our area continues to grow and is a great addition to the Falcons Athletic Department and the SIC community.”

Miller is recruiting golfers now for the fall season. Scholarships may be available. To be considered for the team, visit and fill out the brief form or email Miller directly at
