HLTH 118 – Introduction to Phlebotomy
Prepares the student in the techniques of phlebotomy (blood collecting), selection and care of equipment, and maintenance of safety standards in healthcare facilities. This is an 8-week class given each Fall and Spring semester. This is not a certificate program.
Phlebotomists collect patient blood samples by performing venipuncture and finger sticks.
Students who complete HLTH 118 will receive a certificate of completion from the college; this alone does not give you certification. Students who have finished the phlebotomy class may choose to become certified by taking an exam. Certification may be obtained by exam from the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians or the National Healthcareer Association. If you choose to take a certification exam after completing the course, it will be your responsibility to schedule and pay for the exam you choose. If you have a prospective employer, you should contact them and inquire which certification they prefer. Employment is available in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare provider offices.
