Phlebotomy Certificate
Prepares the student in the techniques of phlebotomy (blood collecting), selection and care of equipment, and maintenance of safety standards in healthcare facilities. This is an 16-week curriculum offered each Fall and Spring semester.
Phlebotomists collect patient blood samples by performing venipuncture and finger sticks. The Bureau of Labor Statistics project an 8% job growth in the field through 2033.
Program Learning Outcomes
Goal 1: Be able to check all orders and patient bands for accuracy.
Goal 2: Demonstrate proficiency in assisting laboratory technicians in preparing, storing, and processing blood and other specimens appropriately in hospital/clinic settings.
Goal 3: Process/label laboratory orders accurately and as prescribed.
Goal 4: Apply verbal, nonverbal, and written communication principles and skills effectively and compassionately within a team setting.
Goal 5: Uphold legal and ethical standards and adhere to principles of patient confidentiality within the health care and community environment as defined by HIPAA.
Goal 6: Maintain industry standards of quality control and safety principles in the workplace.
Goal 7: Demonstrate professionalism through acceptable attitude, organization and time management skills, and attire.
Goal 8: Prepare for the phlebotomy certification examination.
Phlebotomy Certificate Cost Sheet
Students who have finished the phlebotomy certificate may choose to become certified by taking an exam. Certification may be obtained by exam from the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians or the National Healthcareer Association. If you choose to take a certification exam after completing the course, it will be your responsibility to schedule and pay for the exam you choose. If you have a prospective employer, you should contact them and inquire which certification they prefer. Employment is available in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare provider offices.
